Common Core Standards for Literature:
We will take an in depth look at Literature by analyzing the central ideas or themes within the story by citing evidence from the text to support our claim. We will refer to details and examples in a text when making inferences. We will analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text. We will interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meaning, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone. We will compare and contrast the point of view from which different stories are narrated, including the difference between first and third person narration. We will compare and contrast the treatment of similar themes and topics, and patterns of events in stories, myths, and traditional literature from different cultures.

We will analyze the structure of texts (chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution, classification, and description) and determine the main idea and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize text. We will analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text. We will interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyzing how specific word choices shape meaning and tone. We will assess how point of view or purpose shapes the content and style of a text. We will delineate and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, including the validity of the reasoning as well as the relevance and sufficiency of the evidence.
Common Core Standards for Writing:
We will write arguments to support claims in an analysis of substantive topics or texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence. We will write informative/explanatory text to examine and convey complex ideas and information, organization, and analysis of content. We will be able to introduce a topic clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure in which related ideas are grouped to support the writer's purpose. We will be able to provide reasons that are supported by facts and details, link opinion and reasons using words and phrases, and provide a concluding statement related to the opinion presented.
